Start of the visit

"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Choranche Caves. We are setting out together on a guided visit lasting one hour. The temperature inside the caves is +10° C and never varies, of course.

at the foot of the caveWe find ourselves here at the foot of 300 m cliff so in a few seconds without going downwards at all we will be 300 m underground. Everyone can follow the trail because it is flat all the way, but do be sure to stay on the paths because we are going to walk alongside underground rivers. The stalactites are the exceptional feature in this cave and are very fine, so extremely fragile. So we ask you please not to touch them."  next

Did you know ?

What is the difference
between a cave
and a swallow-hole ?

A swallow-hole
is a vertical opening in the rock. In many areas of France swallow-holes are called
avens "
(in the Occitan dialect).
In the Vercors there are thousands of vertical openings and we call them
scialets "

A cave
cave on the other hand is a horizontal opening.
Choranche is a typical example of a cave with a horizontal development.
