THE WATERFALLS

A multitude of streams and rivers rush down the slopes of the cirque around Choranche to join the Bourne river. As it crosses the mountains the water leaches out the lime then deposits it in the waterfalls. Here the lime is trapped by the vegetation and as the latter rots away a very special rock is formed, called calcareous tufa. The most beautiful waterfall near here is undoubtedly the Gournier fall (about 20 mins from the reception office).

Did you know ?
Did you know ?

Every day over
3 tons of tufa
are formed
in this manner
in the Choranche cirque.

Remark
Remark

Because
of its little holes
tufa is an excellent
heat insulator
and is also
easy to work.
For these reasons
it was often
used in buildings
(corner stones, chimney breasts, etc...).
